The Legendary Anime Concludes a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of filler arcs. Starting in the new year, after the current storyline concludes, the animated series will go on a three-month hiatus until April, when the next major arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will release a pair of cours every year for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a six-month break that began in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with others instead handling more material or more to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the art can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in seasons, with one or two at most releasing each year, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
