Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to question specific calls from the official, following the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
